How to bust my cat self esteem and try to erase her bad memory…?
My daughter found our cat Princess in horrific and disaster stage.
She was wet, maybe just about one month old as she didn’t know how to eat or drink. She was shaking and was afraid. Slowly she starts adjusting to our home, but…
Its 4 years since Princess is with us and she is still afraid of her own shadow. We also have another cat Inspector which is a few months older than her with completely lay back personality.
I don’t know what else we can do to make her more secure…?
Some cats are jsut skittish. Does Princess let you hold her or does she approach you on her own? If not, it could be that she is just an independent cat. Do you have children in the house that are very loud or run around a lot? This could be scaring her more and not helping the situation.
My cats bonded to me because I've had them since they were born, but one of them still runs from my husband everytime he approaches her. We've been together 3 years now and still she runs and won't let him even pet her (he always chased her through the house or sprayed her wiht the water bottle when she was acting bad) because I think she associated him with stress and punishment. He would also purposely run after her stomping his feet, which never helped things, that just scared her more.
I told him to be nicer and although she still runs and hides when he walks by sometimes, she will occasionally approach him and let him scratch her head and ears before running off again. It takes a lot of time for them to be trusting when already exposed to stress and if they associate people as some of the cause of the stress it will take even longer for the affection to come. Just keep things calm in your house and decrease any loud noises or chasing Princess around, let her come to you and maybe try petting her when you feed her or holding your arm out for her to rub on when she walks by. A pharamone plug-in may be helpful too (about $20-40 at PetSmart).
