Why do circuit boards come in sizes under 10 in. by 10 in. usually I need a huge circuit baord for a led sign
I'm working on an LED circuit board and wanted to do the "ping pong ball trick" to create a big sign..... You drill a hole in a ping pong ball and place it over the led. I want a 40 by 60 circuit board. No one seems to carry one. II know most people would use light bulbs but LED's and Ping Pong balls are cheap. Is this because of the nano era or would a huge circuit board only be necessary for a supercomputer. is it a security isssue?
Circuit boards are meant to compress electronic circuits down to a level that fingers and such will have problems working directly on.
In you case, the large size requires you get something more sturdy than a circuit board as a base to attach your parts to.
And the longer distances will require you to run at a higher voltage to drive your LED's, as the resistance of copper increases with distance, unless you increase the cross-sectional area. PC board copper lines are really small and thin to carry that much current.
I would recommend you go to a lumber store for a fairly stiff & sturdy board to build on, tack on your LED's mounted on small pieces of PC board, connect them all with copper wiring and then use small wood block spacers to mount a cover with holes to show only the ping pong balls. Costs may go up, but that's why not everyone does this, and it'll still be cheaper than getting a 40x60 circuit board.
FYI - circuit board do not exceed about 20" x 30", and those are mainly for computer servers and such. Supercomputers will typically have multiple layers of these 20" x 30" plates, as the jump up of 1-2" from one board to the next is shorter than the jump across the entire 30" board - just plain old physical distance issues.
