why are emergency exit doors not otherwise normal exit doors? ?
I mean okay, they're just additional exits that could relieve congestion - and there doesn't seem to be a good reason why people would be normally barred from them at other times. The emergency alarm can be simply activated by other ways - pulling the fire alarm or calling 911.
For security purposes, most businesses and building managers want all traffic in and out of the building to be through the main entrance where they can concentrate security guards, cameras and theft prevention equipment. Persons seeking to leave the building through an obscure back door may be doing so to avoid detection.
At the same time, we want people to be able to exit the building by the nearest exit in case of emergency. The alarmed emergency exit is a good compromise.
