How to make steel rust proof?

I made a commercial crab pot frame out of just regular round steel because it was way cheaper than buying stainless. Is there some type of rubber spray paint or something that i can coat the crab pot in so it wont rust?

Mike,,,There may 2 things you might try. Go to Sears or Home Depot or Loews or a good hardware store and ask for that stuff you can dip your hand tools in to give the tool a vinyl grip. I'm sure you've seen it on TV.
OR

Go to an automotive store and ask for that "spray on" / "brush on" undercoating for cars/trucks.

LOL, Mike,,, your pots should be in the water catching crab/s not out in the air getting rusty.
If I recall, the traps for the King Crab uses 3/4" re-rod. That re-rod will last longer then most of us will.

Look at the guys on the "Deadliest Catch" They use steel re-rod for their traps. Even if you don't coat the re-rod, I think you'll be fine.
