A question for those who are Jewish or familiar with kosher food laws?
I remember seeing an old episode of People's Court a long time ago, in which a recently married Jewish couple sued the bakery that made their wedding cake because it did not meet kosher guidelines, and, therefore could not be eaten and they had obtain a new cake at the last minute. I don't remember the specifics of the case, but I had always thought kosher laws, for the most part, addressed meat and its preparation, so I am just curious what would be "unkosher" about a cake and how would a food like cake meet or not meet kosher standards?
1) it had lard
2) the gelatine was from pig bone or animal bone and the cake had milk
3) they did not use kosher ingredients
4) the dish was used for preparing non-kosher food beforehand
just sort of off the cuff... there are tons of rules.
the couple made a mistake by not ordering a cake from a kosher place to begin with. they could only sue themselves.
